FAQ on SCBA
1. How often do we need to check our SCBAs?
It is recommended that the SCBAs be checked at least once a year to confirm that the equipment is in working condition. Once SCBA has been used (either during fire condition or fire drill), it should be topped up right away to ensure that it is always at full capacity. SCBA cylinders should also be hydrotested once every 5 years to ensure that there are no leakage of defects in the cylinder body.
2. What are the different type of cylinders available for SCBAs?
SCBAs are normally available either in 6.0 liter steel cylinders that can last around 30 minutes or 6.8 liter composite cylinders that are light weight. The composite cylinders are usually made up of carbon fiber material and will be relatively more expensive than the standard 6.0 liter steel cylinders.
3. Where should I locate my SCBAs?
SCBAs are usually located in the fire command centre within the building for rapid deployment in the event of an emergency. We do not recommend SCBAs to be exposed to direct sunlight as it might lead to cylinder damage due to expansion. In a worst case scenario, the cylinder can even rupture and cause injuries or death.
SCBAs are also often located outside server rooms that have gas suppression system (FM 200, Novec 1230 etc) to be used when you need to enter the room when there is a gas discharge. It is important to maintain the SCBA together with the gas suppression system concurrently.
