EV XShield — EV Fire Spread Prevention System Singapore
Fiready Pte Ltd introduces the EV XShield EV Fire Spread Prevention System — a fixed under-vehicle water spray suppression system engineered specifically for electric vehicle charging bays and EV parking zones in Singapore. When an EV battery fire is detected, EV XShield automatically activates water spray nozzles positioned directly beneath the vehicle — cooling the battery at the source and preventing fire from spreading to adjacent vehicles until SCDF firefighters arrive.
- Purpose-built for EV carpark fire safety — not a modified conventional sprinkler
- Dual detection — linear heat detector (primary) + flame detector (optional)
- Under-vehicle water spray — targets the battery source, not just the top of the vehicle
- Automatic and manual activation — operates without human intervention
- Utilises existing sprinkler water supply — no separate water tank required
- TÜV SÜD PSB-registered fire and safety services contractor
The EV Fire Challenge in Singapore’s Carparks
Singapore’s electric vehicle adoption is accelerating rapidly. As of March 2026, approximately 30,500 EV charging points had been deployed across Singapore, with a national target of 60,000 by 2030. More than 90% of HDB carparks were equipped with EV charging points by December 2025. As charging infrastructure expands across condominiums, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and HDB estates, the fire safety implications of EV batteries in enclosed carparks demand serious attention.
⚠️ Why EV Battery Fires Are Different
EV fires are rare — but when they happen in an enclosed carpark, they are significantly harder to manage than conventional vehicle fires. The lithium-ion battery sits beneath the vehicle and can reach extremely high temperatures during thermal runaway. Conventional overhead sprinklers cannot effectively reach the fire source from above. In underground and multi-storey carparks, fire truck access is limited. And EV battery fires can re-ignite after visible flames are suppressed — requiring sustained cooling at the source.
Four Current Challenges for EV Charging and Parking Areas
01) Battery Fire Risk — Thermal Runaway
Lithium-ion battery thermal runaway creates a cascading failure across battery cells — producing extreme heat, fire and toxic gases that are difficult to control.
02) Electrical Hazards
Faulty wiring, overheating or short circuits at charging stations can cause sparks that trigger battery fires — particularly during high-voltage fast charging.
03) Facility and Infrastructure Damage
Charging stations and EV parking bays are often in underground carparks or enclosed facilities where fire spread to adjacent vehicles and building structure is a serious risk.
04) User and Public Safety
Without early detection and automatic suppression, occupants of underground carparks may not have sufficient time to evacuate safely when an EV fire starts.
Why Conventional Fire Systems Are Insufficient for EV Carparks
❌ Conventional Overhead Sprinklers
- ✗ Spray water from above — cannot reach under-vehicle battery pack
- ✗ Limited effectiveness in underground carparks with restricted fire truck access
- ✗ Cannot address thermal runaway re-ignition
- ✗ Not designed for EV battery source fires
✅ EV XShield Under-Vehicle System
- ✅ Spray water from floor level directly under the vehicle
- ✅ Targets the battery pack at the source of thermal runaway
- ✅ Automatic activation — no fire truck access required in first response
- ✅ Continuous cooling prevents re-ignition until SCDF arrives
What Is EV XShield?
EV XShield is a fixed EV fire spread prevention system installed in the floor of EV parking bays and charging zones. It combines detection (linear heat detector) with an automated water valve system and under-vehicle spray nozzles — providing an integrated, automatic first response to EV battery fires in carparks.
The system is designed to work with the existing indoor sprinkler water supply — no dedicated water storage tank is required, making it practical and cost-effective for retrofitting into existing carparks.
EV XShield is available in two configurations to suit different carpark layouts and requirements:
- Full Parking Bed System — a complete under-vehicle suppression platform installed across the full parking bay (5,000 × 2,300 × 63mm) with 8 cooling nozzles per bay delivering 240 LPM at 3K
- One Nozzle EV Car Fire System — a compact single-rail unit (395 × 3,256 × 52mm) with integrated linear heat detector, nozzles and valve — suitable for individual EV charging spots and narrower installations. Delivers 300 LPM at 3K via bronze nozzles
How EV XShield Works — Step by Step
1) Detection — A linear heat detector installed in the parking bed senses the elevated temperature from an EV battery fire. This is the primary detection trigger.
2) Activation — The fire signal triggers the alarm panel and automatically opens the main electric valve (M.O.V) connected to the building’s sprinkler water supply.
3) Isolation — The individual electric ball valve for the specific affected parking bay opens — ensuring only the affected bay is activated, not the entire carpark.
4) Discharge — Water is sprayed upward from cooling nozzles positioned beneath the vehicle, directly onto the underside of the EV and the battery pack. The nozzle design provides inside spray up to 110° and outside spray up to 160° for maximum coverage.
5) Suppression — The water spray reduces heat, suppresses fire and helps prevent fire from spreading to adjacent vehicles and carpark structure.
6) Stabilisation — Cooling continues automatically until SCDF firefighters arrive and take control. If automatic detection does not activate, a facility manager can manually operate the electric valves via the emergency manual control panel.

Frequently Asked Questions — EV Fire Suppression System Singapore
What is an EV fire spread prevention system?
An EV fire spread prevention system is a fixed fire suppression system installed beneath EV parking bays in carparks and charging zones. When a fire is detected, the system automatically activates water spray nozzles positioned under the vehicle — cooling the battery pack at the source and preventing fire from spreading to adjacent vehicles. The EV XShield system uses a linear heat detector as primary detection and a flame detector as an optional secondary confirmation before discharging water.
Why are EV fires harder to manage in carparks?
EV battery fires are harder to manage in enclosed carparks because the lithium-ion battery sits beneath the vehicle — conventional overhead sprinklers cannot effectively reach the fire source. In underground and multi-storey carparks, access for fire trucks is limited. EV battery fires can also re-ignite after visible flames are suppressed due to ongoing thermal runaway. An under-vehicle system addresses these challenges directly.
What is thermal runaway in an EV battery?
Thermal runaway occurs when a lithium-ion battery cell overheats and triggers a chain reaction — heat causes adjacent cells to fail in a cascading sequence that can engulf the entire battery pack. Causes include mechanical damage, overcharging, internal short circuits or external heat. Thermal runaway produces extreme temperatures and toxic gases, making rapid cooling at the source critical.
How does the EV XShield system work?
When a linear heat detector in the parking bed senses a fire, the system automatically triggers the main electric valve connected to the sprinkler water supply, opens individual electric ball valves at the affected bay, and discharges water from nozzles positioned beneath the vehicle. The water cools the battery pack and prevents fire spread until firefighters arrive. Facility managers can also activate the system manually if needed.
Does the EV XShield system require a separate water tank?
No. The EV XShield system utilises the existing indoor sprinkler water supply in the building — no separate water storage tank is required. This significantly simplifies installation and reduces cost, particularly for retrofitting into existing carparks.
Can EV XShield be installed in existing carparks?
Yes. The EV XShield system is designed to be retrofittable to existing carparks — including indoor and underground parking areas. Installation uses chemical anchor bolts to secure the parking bed unit to the floor without major structural modification.
Who needs an EV fire suppression system in Singapore?
Any premises with EV charging bays or EV parking zones — including condominiums, HDB carparks, commercial buildings, shopping malls, hotels, industrial facilities, fleet depots and logistics hubs. With more than 90% of HDB carparks equipped with EV charging points by December 2025 and a national target of 60,000 charging points by 2030, EV fire safety is a growing priority for building management across Singapore.
